General Fostering Questions

What is fostering and why is it important?
Fostering means temporarily caring for a pet in your home until they’re adopted. It’s a critical part of our work because HSCTX does not operate a shelter. Every pet we help lives in a foster home. Fostering gives animals a chance to decompress, recover, and show their true personalities in a safe, loving environment.

It varies. Some pets are adopted within a week, while others may stay for several months. We’ll always communicate what we expect based on the pet’s age, health, and adoption readiness.

We place dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and sometimes bonded pairs or special-needs animals. You can choose the type of pet that fits your comfort and experience.

Yes. We’ll provide profiles and background info so you can foster pets that match your lifestyle, availability, and home setup.

Foster Requirements & Expectations

Anyone 18 or older who lives in Central Texas and can provide a safe, stable, and pet-friendly home. A short application and orientation are required.

Not necessarily. We welcome first-time fosters and will help match you with pets suited to your level of experience. Training and resources are provided.

Yes. Many of our best fosters have resident pets. We’ll help you choose foster animals that are a good match and walk you through how to introduce them safely.

Yes, as long as your lease allows pets. We may ask for landlord approval or documentation depending on the situation.

Supplies, Costs & Support

No, it doesn’t cost money to start fostering. While some fosters choose to provide food or other supplies, it’s not mandatory— we will cover the basic necessities like food, vet care, and supplies to support you in caring for the animal.

We provide food, bowls, leashes, litter, crates, toys, and any medications or treatments the pet needs. You’ll get a starter kit when you begin fostering.

You’re never on your own. Our foster support team is available for guidance, medical concerns, and behavior tips. We’re just a message or phone call away.

In most cases, yes. We’ll work with your schedule and may have volunteers to assist if you’re unavailable. Transportation support is available as needed.

Pet Care & Day-to-Day

Yes. Many of our fosters have full-time jobs. We’ll help place pets that can thrive in your routine and offer tips for managing care around your schedule.

Fostering is a generous act, and while accidents are rare, we understand they can happen. Let us know right away so we can address the issue and help prevent future problems.

Yes. If you know you have a trip planned while fostering, let us know in advance so we can arrange a temporary foster.

Emotional Aspects & Outcomes

It’s completely normal to fall in love. Many fosters say goodbye with a mix of pride and heartache — and many also go on to foster again because they know how much their care helped. And if you really fall in love, you always have the option to adopt.

Yes, fosters are welcome to adopt if it’s the right fit and the pet hasn’t been promised to another applicant. Let us know early so we can pause adoption promotions if needed.
